We hadn't been to the Church for supper in 5 or 6 years and are we ever glad we came back. Our waitress suggested we try the 100 mile menu, so I had that and David had the fois gras and bass. Top to bottom our meal was great, waitress very well informed and prices very fair. One little glitch, we waited a bit long for bread, but once it came it was worth the wait. We won't be waiting 5 years to go back this time!

From the moment we walked in the door, our experience was phenomenal. The manager (Jocelyn, I believe) was warm, cordial and inviting. We were quickly seated at a lovely table (I couldn't imagine a bad table in this spectacular space) in the upper section at the back of the restaurant. Our waiter (his name escapes me, balding, extremely knowledgeable and pleasant) greeted us with the same warmth as at the front. We had heard a lot about post-modern dining as we are from Chicago and were quite desperate to give it a try. Here's where the adventure began. The chef (head chef no less) came to our table with a concoction of ginger, oolong and liquid nitrogen and made us blow smoke out of our noses - very cool. Then some remarkable little liquid center balls of pea with different flavorings on them came to explode on our palates. I'd have to reference a menu to remember what came next, but I remember shortly after a course of seared foie gras and mango sticks and a broth that we had to suck through a vanilla bean - we both thought we had died and gone to heaven. The rest of the meal progressed in this same fashion and every course seemed better than the previous. I know there a lot of nay-sayers regarding the Church, but I have to tell our FAITH is strong and the chef and front of house deserve all the acclaim that they are receiving. Congratulations!!!!!

I read this reviews and laugh, I think it is amusing that most of these people have a hard time understanding the purpose of the menu. Our server was wonderful, extremely thoughtful and made a definite effort to contribute to our experience. He quickly developed a relationship with us and we were very pleased. We like most people had heard about the Church from our friends and were extremely pleased. Although we were not able to commit to the large tasting menu we fully enjoyed the smaller one, and the wine pairings were complimentary. If the other people writing on this website are dissapointed then try a restaurant a little lower down on the formality ladder. We were blessed with a informal and down-to-earth waiter with a formal and refined atmosphere and meal. Will definately visit again, keep up the good work.

As a food and wine writer for major publications, I'd heard many rave reviews about the Church over the years in regards to both the food and the wine list. Sadly, the quality seems to have diminished on both fronts. The food wasn't terrible, but the value for money is simply not there. The hostess should have simply picked my pocket and shoved me back outside still hungry. The wine list is mediocre at best, and the mark up on certain labels is obscene! Additionally, the waiter was loud and annoying and tried to aggressively push the "Science Lab" menu on us. Judging by the numerous poor ratings provided here, the Church has without doubt dropped the ball.
