Though you may not recognize her name, you’ve likely seen some of the colourful textile creations from designer Bev Hisey. The self-taught designer began her career in fashion, dismantling vintage clothing and piecing it back together before making the switch to soft furnishings in 1990. Her collection now focuses on hand-tufted, knotted and woven carpets; toss cushions and poufs—all of which showcase her unique eye for colour and pattern. At her Dundas West shop, Bev also carries a curated selection of vintage Italian and Scandinavian pottery and glass, as well as some special mid-century modern furniture pieces. “I want to offer people a unique comprehensive style that they won’t find anywhere else,” says Bev. “In the shop you can discover a great piece of furniture, a fantastic pillow, a unique carpet and all of the accoutrements that go with setting up a standout room.”
After a successful run in the U.S., Bev decided to focus her attention back on the Canadian market. In 2011 she opened her design studio and storefront into a retail location. “I wanted to create an inclusive space where I could have complete control over how my collections are showcased,” explains Bev. “Having my own shop means I can work directly with clients and help them to find a really special piece for their home.” Regular shoppers include design junkies, people from the neighbourhood as well as a number of architects and designers who have worked with Bev over the years.
