Flash back to 1964. That’s when Justin Doria’s grandfather, Frank, made the move from employee at a popular hot dog chain to restaurant owner. “My grandfather, my father and my uncle decided to go into the restaurant business,” Justin explains. “This place came up for sale, there was an opportunity, and 52 years later, here we are at Yonge and Doncaster!”
In those days, Golden Star was a four-table diner. “They used to call it a drive-in because you would literally drive in, order your food and go eat in the car,” says Justin. “That’s why it’s called Golden Star Drive-In. I guess in the sixties that was pretty popular.”
The restaurant’s dining hall was built in 1979, but aside from that, a quick look around reveals that not much has changed since the early days. And that’s the way this burger joint’s customers like it. “As far as our decor, a lot of our regulars don’t want us to renovate; they want to keep that old nostalgic feel and look to it,” Justin says. “It’s a fun place. There aren’t too many of these places left.”

Delicious burgers...I'm not sure why people even go to big-name fast food chains (not mentioning any names!) when there is places like this around. Definitely my first choice when I feel like a good old fashioned burger splurge. The decor is...well, it's a burger joint - what do you expect? :)
Ok, I search everywhere I go to try to find the best hamburger and Golden Star continues to be the very best. No one can compare to their burger- it's the best quality of beef, freshly ground, special seasonings and handmade large flat patties. The bun is exceptional too. Don't get the regular burger- go for the "Homemade" or "Homemade deluxe" You won't be disappointed!!!!!!!!
I grew up in Thornhill and have been getting the homemade burger here for over 15 years. I have searched far and wide for a better burger... this is the best!
The best burgers in the city. Great service. Fast and Friendly. Have a patio to sit outside. Have gone back and will go back.
Super Star Burger was the best I've ever had, anywhere (I think they're homemade)! Plenty of onion rings. Fantastic!

For the best burger joint North of Toronto, head to Golden Star. This old-school family-owned restaurant has been around since 1964 and gets returning customers who first stopped by in the ’70s. The patties are charbroiled to juicy perfection and they make rich milkshakes that come in the standard chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavours, but also interesting options like cotton candy and piña colada, to name a few. Note: they’re a cash-only joint.
