Made to order sandwiches on wonderful chewy bread. We tried the pork and the fish varieties accompanied by our side choices of pickled vegetables and green salad. All tasted fresh and tasty and unique blend. The brewed unsweetened iced tea was a nice finish. The restaurant has this wooden, rustic open feel. There is an entrance on both Powell and Alexander streets. Sufficient street pay parking at the edge of gastown.
You’ll feel like you’re in a small-town Maritime kitchen at this charming Gastown café, which offers a range of over-the-counter menu items that take inspiration from honest, local ingredients. The daily fish sandwich is especially – and indescribably – fresh. Sandwiches are prepared with a catch-of-the-day fish (sourced from Vancouver’s Finest at Sea) and topped with the owners’ own homemade pickles and sour cream.
A relative newcomer to Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood, The Birds and The Beets has already earned a loyal following among in-the-know foodies. And while you might come for the Instagram-worthy interior and fresh flower bouquets, you’ll return time and time again after you sample the wholesome daytime menu selections. Stop in for breakfast to sample a fruity twist on the classic hot porridge. Rolled oat and chia seed Bircher muesli is sprinkled with nuts, raisins and fresh apple slices. Served cold, this refreshing dish makes an ideal oatmeal alternative in the warm summer months.
Exposed brick walls, communal dining areas and stunning graphic design make The Birds and the Beets the quintessential Railtown eatery. The café’s menu focuses on healthy, sustainable meals and snacks that let the flavours speak for themselves. Enjoy an avocado and slow poached egg brioche sandwich for an early lunch (served for breakfast), or choose to include seasonal chargrilled vegetables to a salad or sandwich, accompanied by a jar of homemade pickles.
