Meet the owner

Ethiopian cuisine has caught on for its spicy stews, roasted meats, vegetarian purées, and strong, fragrant coffee. Resident chef Rekiya Desta opened Fassil on International Avenue in 2006 after she and husband Moges Aman ran one of Vancouver’s first Ethiopian restaurants for 13 years. They decided to make the move to Calgary in the mid-aughts, and Moges recalls they worried that their new restaurant would have to weather the usual business doldrums during its first few months. Instead, it immediately took off. “Many Ethiopian Calgarians would vacation in Vancouver and eat at our restaurant,” he explains. “They became our customers once we opened Fassil.” Rekiya’s reputation as a chef has also spread outside the city’s Ethiopian community.

For something completely different, try kifto. The Ethiopian equivalent of French tartare, it consists of minced raw beef, a chili spice blend and clarified butter infused with herbs and spices. Fassil, a friendly Ethiopian place on International Avenue with a varied and flavourful menu, offers a particularly good kifto alongside its other meat and vegetarian dishes.

Perfect for sharing, Fassil serves beautifully prepared Ethiopian food. With house-made injera bread, scoop up various meat, fish and vegetarian stews. Bestselling dishes include spicy chickpea stew, roast lamb shoulder and kifto, a spiced steak tartar dish. Also enjoy a uniquely satisfying cup of Ethiopian coffee. Conducted at your table, Fassil’s serving ceremony features pan-roasted green-bean coffee and incense.
