May 1, 2016

Discovering that your favourite clothes have been eaten by moths is a real disappointment. Here are four natural ways to get rid of these pests and scent your laundry at the same time.

4 natural ways to protect your clothing from moths

1. Make instant moth repellant

  • Mix equal parts of lavender essential oils, rosemary, cloves and lemon in a small vial.
  • Empty your clothes cupboards and run a cloth moistened with the mixture inside and out.

2. Fill your home with moth repellant plants

You can choose from any of the following plants:

  • Lavender
  • Santolina
  • Rosemary
  • Absinthe
  • Sweetscented bedstraw
  • Feverfew
  • Tansy
  • Patchouli

3. Sew some moth-repellant sachets

  • To take advantage of the natural repellent qualities of many plants and common spices, store moth sachets in your drawers or tie them to your hangers.

4. Make drawer liners

Pouches filled with lavender or moth-repellant plants can also be placed between the piles of linen. Unryu paper is a resistant and porous Japanese fibre paper, which can be purchased at hobby stores.

Materials:

  • Sheets of paper
  • Sewing thread
  • Dried spices and plants

What to do:

  1. Cut two sheets of paper slightly smaller than the bottom of the drawer or in squares of 30 centimetre (15 inches), as they are easier to work with.
  2. Use a machine to sew the two pieces together at 1 centimetre (1/2 inch) from the edge, leaving an opening.
  3. Fill with plants or dried spices and machine-sew the opening closed.

These tips will help you to make your clothes last for a long time, safe from moths.
