Magic, music and fun: Family Day in Calgary

Fishing fun

Family Day 2017 offers Calgary families the chance to try their hand at fishing at the Family FISHtival. Hosted by Bow Habitat Station, the event also includes a magnetic fishing game, marshmallow roasting and an opportunity to meet the four-legged members of the aquatic invasive species team.

Mounties and sugar

A full day of family fun is scheduled at Fort Calgary as it hosts WinterFest, including a Québécois sugar shack, traditional Blackfoot winter stories and a dreamcatcher making workshop. Children can also try on Mountie uniforms and participate in various games and learning activities. A lunch service is also scheduled as part of the program.

Good vibes

Calgary's beautiful Studio Bell is set to open its doors on a Monday especially for Family Day 2017. “We invite families to spend the day at Studio Bell, and connect with each other through music and memories,” said Cynthia Klaassen, the National Music Centre’s Manager of Venue and Visitor Services in a press release.

Head down with your family for a day of good vibes and fun, whether you enjoy learning how to play the guitar or listening to favourite tunes as Studio Bell offers unlimited opportunities to indulge in a beat. The Family Day event includes live music all day and the chance to craft your own Sound Sandwich instrument.

Military museums

Try something new with the family this year by paying a visit to the Military Museums of Calgary, who have scheduled an all-day event. Children can design, build and test their very own tanks, experience a marching drill and discover rarely seen artifacts from Canada's tank regiment.

Magic market

There's no shortage of fun activities planned at Family Fun Day at Eau Claire Market – face painting, carnival games and a magician are just a few of the attractions scheduled. The free event also includes kids' musicians, an ice carving demonstration and an artisan market.

Lights on

For a bright and illuminating choice this Family Day, head downtown to experience GLOW – Downtown Winter Light Festival. The Calgary Downtown Association is set to host the inaugural GLOW show, which promises a family-friendly interactive light festival. The event is set to warm up winter's coldest days with one-of-a-kind light installations, theatrical experiences and interactive art shows.

A family quest

Learn about some of the greatest drivers of history and indulge in a fun-fueled day this Family Day. Visitors of Heritage Park can participate in Family Quest at the Gasoline Alley Museum, a chance to compete on the race track, a winter scavenger hunt and a tricycle obstacle course.

There will be no shortage of magic, music and family fun this Family Day weekend with a number of exciting attractions scheduled around the city. Though Calgary still is in the midst of some very cold weather, Family Day is a chance to warm up and have some fun with the people you love most.
