When you're suffering from the unsettling feeling of nausea, all you can think about is how to get rid of it. Read on for tips to help soothe your tummy troubles.

Expert tips on getting rid of nausea

Pregnancy

Pregnant women often suffer from morning sickness, a form of nausea that can even last all day. Ice cubes and water-heavy fruits like watermelon can help remedy the effects of nausea. Ginger has been shown to increase saliva flow, which helps alleviate nausea. However, pregnant women should consult their doctor before taking ginger or any over-the-counter medications.

Motion sickness

Motion sickness as a result of travel is a common form of nausea. Over-the-counter medications can be effective in preventing motion sickness. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist. When riding in a car, sit in the front. Look out the window ahead at a fixed point rather than out the side window. Avoid reading in a moving vehicle.

Infection

An infection from food poisoning or a stomach virus can cause symptoms to come on quickly and with force. If you feel the urge to vomit, let it out. Vomiting is the body’s natural way to get rid of something harmful. Gargle and rinse after vomiting to remove any stomach acids from the mouth.

Symptoms of infection usually dissipate once the virus or bacteria has made its way through your system. Try to stay hydrated by slowly sipping water or sucking on ice cubes. Cold compresses on the back of the neck can provide relief. Introduce a bland diet consisting of bananas, rice, applesauce (no sugar) and toast (no butter).

Food allergy

Food allergies are one of the main causes of nausea, as they create an immune reaction in the body. Nausea typically accompanies other symptoms caused by food allergies including wheezing, hives, swelling, vomiting or diarrhea. Food allergies are common in people with asthma or with allergies to other substances like mould and pollen. The best defence is to get tested if you suspect you have a food allergy. Consult your doctor on the right course of action.

Odours

Foul smells can induce nausea and even vomiting. If possible, remove yourself from the location of the smell. Take deep breaths in and out of your mouth while applying basic acupressure. Using two fingers, apply pressure to the inside of your other wrist. Aim for the crease just below your hand, between two large tendons. Hold for at least 30 seconds.

Emotional stress

Sometimes anxiety can get the best of us by making us physically nauseous. In this case, try mind over matter. Calm your thinking through controlled breathing, or meditate.

Nausea is an unpleasant feeling, but one you can usually remedy without medication. Seek medical attention if your nausea is accompanied by fever, severe stomach pain or blood in your vomit or stool.
