I visited West with a friend that had been there a couple of times before. The outside of the restaurant was very unassuming. You would have no idea that there was a fantastic restaurant inside. Parking may be an issue as it's a busy streetfront but they did seem to have valet. We sat at the bar and had cesars until our table was ready--made fresh with muddled tomato right in front of our eyes. The food was all amazing both in appearance and taste. REALLY good. Maria's is a Kitsilano institution. The atmosphere is everything you would expect a Greek restaurant to offer complete with pictures of Greek scenery adorning the walls. The food is really good and even my wife who is not the biggest fan of Greek food loves the food at Maria's. I usually have what I had on our most recent visit...one of the souvlaki dinners. Our most recent trip I had chicken souvlaki and the chicken was perfectly tender and the potatoes and rice were great too. Next time you have a hankering for Greek food visit Maria's Taverna on 4th! We were a party of 14 and sat in the main restaurant area. The service was excellent. We brought our own wine and paid a low corkage fee. No hard liquor allowed of your own! Our host ordered a set menu and additional dishes. All items were prepared well and tasty excellent. My only comment would be there was two times where the individualized food plates came out too soon and I was still working on my previous dish so the table got crowded. So a bunch of us finally headed down to the Blue Canoe for dinner. A few had been there before, and a few hadn't, but we always go and critique places together. Absolutely loved the atmosphere, not a detail was spared in the design of the restaurant. The real tester is of course the food, and it did not disappoint. They've thrown together some amazing flavours and clearly taken some chances that have worked out in their favour. The Drummettes....I don't eat chicken wings anywhere, but these ones were in a soy sauce of some sort that was fantastic!! The BBQ Salmon was probably the best salmon that I've ever had at a restaurant....not overcooked like most places. So much flavour. That was it for me, but others had a wide variety of food and rave reviews on all counts. A few questions on the sides that they came with, but generous portions and smiles all around.
