Once upon a time you’d have to head out to a hidden warehouse in an industrial park if you wanted to get a behind-the-scenes look at how a distillery crafted their liquids. Today, there are many local spots in Vancouver where you can get a peek at the distilling process and sip handcrafted small-batch spirits.
This micro-distillery was first known for their gin, but is now crafting akvavit, amaro, limoncello, vodka and even a barrel-aged gin. Stop in for their Gin and Tonic Fridays (held from 4:00 to 9:00 pm) to enjoy their refreshing gin and tonics along with tasty bites from local food trucks. Saturdays from 3:00 to 9:00 pm, Long Table Distillery mixes up a variety of different cocktails, making it a perfect spot to stop into on your way to or from dinner.
On Powell Street in East Vancouver’s Port District, the distillers at Odd Society are crafting vodka, gin, moonshine, vermouth, whisky and crème de cassis. Their comfortable and stylish tasting room is open on Thursday to Sunday and features signature cocktails, created by local bartenders. Located in an old motorcycle garage, Odd Society is within close proximity to several craft breweries should you wish to spend an afternoon in the area.
Visitors to Granville Island could previously visit a brewery and sake maker, and with last year’s arrival of The Liberty Distillery, the Island is now home to a small-batch distillery as well. Visit for tours and tastings, as well as an ever-changing roster of drinks in their cocktail lounge. The distillery specializes in artisanal vodka, gin and whiskey recipes, and mixes things up with flavoured and barrel-aged varieties.
Known first for their brewery and brewpub, Yaletown Distilling fired up their engines and moved into distilling back in 2013. The artisanal distillery is focused on gin and vodka; you’ll find their classic signature spirits year-round as well as special seasonal releases like hopped gin and citrus-infused mandarin vodka. Tours and tastings are available at the Hamilton Street distillery throughout the day. Stop into the nearby brewpub afterwards for some post sipping eats.
Hidden away in North Vancouver, this charming tasting room is worth seeking out for their take on amaretto, made with local apricot pits and sweetened with B.C. blackberry honey. They also craft straight vodka and spicy chili vodka, a perfect addition to homemade Caesars.
