One could easily believe pottery and ceramics to be lost arts with today’s proliferation of nearly disposable dinnerware “kits.” The success of small businesses like Atelier Make, however, proves that interest for fine ceramics is alive and well. “Our approach to ceramics is very contemporary; it is a material with a long history, but that is greatly appreciated by design aficionados today because of its refinement, beauty and simplicity,” explains co-owner Jaimie Robson.
Many publications have featured Jaimie and partner Maya Ersan’s creations. La Presse, The Globe & Mail, Kinfolk, Châtelaine and Food &Wine, among others, have sung the praises of the finesse of Atelier Make’s aesthetics. Cake stands, cups, plates, utensils, lanterns or citrus presses, Jaimie and Maya handcraft each pretty accessory. The design direction is resolutely contemporary, in shades of white, beige and pastels.
Atelier Make also shares its savoir-faire with budding potters and ceramicists: “we offer classes, and they turned out to be quite popular,” says Jaimie. “They allow the students to familiarize themselves with the techniques and tools and to create unique pieces in a friendly atmosphere.”
