Admittedly, Galerie D’Este wasn’t intended to be a family business when it first opened in 2006. “My father’s focus was more towards the gallery as a creative project in itself, rather than something that would consume time, it would be something meant for time’s enjoyment,” says Alex Leibner, art consultant and son of the gallery’s founder Mark Leibner.
“That’s not to say we don’t enjoy our time here, but it has definitely grown larger than we initially imagined," adds Alex. It is no surprise that their success has continued in no small part due to Mark’s vast experience collecting art and prints of his own, having made frequent trips to Europe in his 25 years of work with Linen Chest, and enriching his collection with works from the likes of Rembrandt and Picasso. “I think it says something about our local artists most of all,” adds Alex, “that we at our base have an eye for those universally renowned classics, and yet still here we see the same talent in need of development and support.”
