Under The Table invites you to their dining room. They are open late from Tuesday to Sunday and are conveniently accessible by bicycle and public transit. They are in a lively surrounding acknowledged for its verdant spaces.
Under the Table’s online reputation precedes it. With dozens of online reviews touting the “family-owned gem” and its “amazing food,” owner Kim Simpson says she and business partner Betty Simpson made it through their first year of business on the strength of word-of-mouth recommendations. Tourists from New York and Los Angeles and Europe are impressed by what they read, and sometimes come straight from the airport to her restaurant.
At Under the Table, established in June 2013 and located below street level on Parliament Street, Kim and Betty are omnipresent. The two are the entirety of the front-of-house and back-of-house operation, save for a dishwasher and one additional server Thursday through Sunday.
“It’s a perfect balance,” says Kim. “I want to take care of people, and she wants to cook.”
This Cabbagetown eatery only uses the best in Jamaican and Canadian ingredients when preparing the delicious eats. You’ll find comfort dishes like jerk chicken, ackee and salt fish on the menu. Under the Table serves brunch on the weekends.
Located in Cabbagetown underneath another restaurant, and while it’s an unassuming little place, the food — what can best be termed as comfort food with some Jamaican-influenced dishes — is of very high quality and lovingly made and served.
