We had heard that this pub prides itself on its food, local produce for example. But on our recent visit, although we enjoyed a decent Beef-n-Brie sandwich and a nice cool lager, the Fish-n-chips was a wretched failure -- too much batter on the fish (solid outside/uncooked batter inside), and chips (fries) that can only be described as soggy sticks of charcoal. The owners desire for outstanding food is commendable but it will not happen without a dedicated chef -- in this case, a student in Japanese tempura.
If you're looking for craft beer, you'll want to give the Black Shire a visit. They have a balanced selection of both macro and micro brews on tap. But what sets the Black Shire apart from other local pubs is its beer inspired menu. The chef isn't afraid to experiment with some different flavours - with some great success! The smoked pork chop with the brown ale and salted caramel glaze is outstanding! Unfortunately, they just don't seem to have the seasonal rotation in the menu that they advertise. The decor is standard sports pub with lots of wood and private nooks and the service courteous, but its the food and beer selection that make the Black Shire worth returning to.
.......you want to go back! The Blackshire is a great place to have a beer.Recently taken over by new owners, this place has a new life. Most food is locally sourced and the beer has a local theme too. Sonita tries to get beer from within 100 miles of the pub, and a lot of the food is sourced from the same area. The menu is upscale pub food with a seasonal twist. Spring Leek Salad, Local Lamb, Crab Apple Salad, fondue with cheese made with local beer, etc.I usually get the fondue as the portion is huge and it is about $10.00, or I get wings in the evening when they are half price. FIre and ice are great! The place has a large patio which is usually fairly busy. Inside, it is typical pub decor with a homey feel to it. Pub quiz night is a solid night to go on to get to know the owners and regulars. I find it better to go to the bar to order your drinks, as table service can be a bit lacking. Taps total 20, including Railway City, Stratford, Creemore,Black Oak, Great Lakes, Steamwhistle, and the bottle selection is limited but has included many micros. I’ll return for the harder to get Ontario micros they seem to always get. Worth checking out.
I was scoping out the Black Shire Pub yesterday because the London Poetry Slam meets there on the last Tuesday of every month. They were closed to customers when I went because there was a group of lawyers in a meeting there. But the management was very accommodating and said that they could put an order into the kitchen for me. I went with the spicy chicken sandwich and fries. The sandwich was DELICIOUS and filling and there were lots of fries. The sweet potato fries tasted okay but could have been so much better. The Black Shire Lager was very good and had a nice finish considering it is a light beer and that I don't like to drink beer.
