Meet the owner

At first glance it’s not the most likely partnership: a chef and a marine biologist. But Robert Clark and Mike McDermid, the joint owners of Main Street’s The Fish Counter, have a lot in common. They first met launching Vancouver Aquarium’s sustainable seafood restaurant initiative, Ocean Wise. Robert was C Restaurant’s award-winning chef and Mike was heading up the Aquarium’s conservation program. Together they created an easy-to-understand sustainable seafood label for restaurants.

“Two thirds of seafood is purchased in restaurants,” explains Mike, “so if we convince one chef to switch to sustainable seafood that makes an impact on thousands of diners.”

That was back in 2005; now the Ocean Wise program stretches from coast to coast across Canada. With this success under their belts, it was time for a new challenge, tackling the other third of seafood consumers. “Mike and I wanted to offer something no one else does,” says Robert, “a sustainable seafood counter for home cooks.”

The idea came about years ago when Mike and his wife were living on Main Street, a funky area with great stores, but nowhere to buy seafood. “I said to Rob, ‘Someone needs to open a sustainable seafood market on Main Street’ and he said, ‘I’ll do it with you’ and that was that.” The Fish Counter opened in December 2013, much to the delight of the local community.

“Every day while we were working on the store we’d get people stopping by, asking when we’re opening.” remembers Mike. “One lady even raced in, gave our foreman a hug, got covered in mud and exclaimed, ‘I’ve been living here almost 30 years and we’ve never had a seafood store on Main. Give the owners a big bear hug for me.’ The community response has been amazing.”

Good fish and chips. Bought fish cakes for home dinner - disappointed - very dry and tasteless. Sockeye Salmon fillets were good.

So fresh, and what wonderful batter. I went for the cod with a soda pop. Get your fresh fish to take home if you want too! Be prepared to wait for goodness and not a large seating area either.

Top seafood spots for fish sandwiches in Vancouver

Top seafood spots for fish sandwiches in Vancouver

This seafood counter in Mount Pleasant is known for its local, Ocean Wise products, but it’s also an excellent place to get fish sandwiches to go. The terrific fried oyster po-boy is served in brown paper and is topped with arugula and spicy cabbage tartar. The takeout menu also features crispy cod tacos, a crab and shrimp sandwich with saffron aioli, and a wild salmon sammy with fennel slaw and chipotle mayo. Tip: grab some crispy, spicy halibut cakes on your way out too – they’re ideal for a late night snack back at home.

    Vancouver restaurants serving spot prawns

For those looking to pick up their own by-the-pound spot prawns to prepare at home, this Main Street fishmonger is a go-to spot. Owner Rob Clark happens to be the founder of the Spot Prawn Festival after all. Live B.C. spot prawns will be available in store this year starting May 12, but get your order in early to avoid disappointment. Less-ambitious seafood fans can visit the take-out counter to enjoy spot prawn tacos. Chef Rob will also be hosting a chef-led cooking class on Saturday, May 14 as part of this year’s festival.

Must-try fish and chips in Vancouver

Must-try fish and chips in Vancouver

This Mount Pleasant hole in the wall makes seafood mobile, serving mostly take-out dishes like clam chowder, halibut cakes, fish tacos, and – you guessed it – some of the best fish and chips this city has to offer. Think fresh, flaky halibut fried in a gluten-free batter, accompanied by thin, crispy fries and a tart kale-cabbage slaw. The tartar sauce deserves appreciation in its own right – tangy with a hint of lemon, and shockingly, lactose-free. The portions are enormous too, but – trust me – you won’t want to share.
