Some of the best diners are made of stick-to-your-ribs comfort food and often inextricably linked to a nostalgic vibe. In Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, there's a kitschy joint that achieves both. With its cheeky throwback flair, The Rumpus Room is a callback to reliving feel-good past glories.
The eatery originally set up shop on Main Street in 2011 before its current incarnation several blocks north where the iconic vegetarian darling The Foundation once flourished.
Friends and business partners Rachel Zottenberg and David Duprey (The Emerald Supper Club, Narrow Lounge, Uncle Abe’s, This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven) re-launched their beloved diner in April 2018 to the delight of the community and loyal customers.
"Main Street is really the land of amazing regulars," says Rachel. "Creating something that brings community together is the focus of everything we do whether a restaurant, art studio, gallery or retail shop; our main focus is making a comfortable creative interesting environment for people to hang out."

Best chicken and waffles in Vancouver
Terrible customer service! Very disrespectful!
Vegetarian restaurant with amazing food at great prices. The nachos are worth the trip alone and are a meal in themselves. Get their early as there can be line ups out the door. Service can be a bit slow, so make sure you have the time. Well worth the wait though.
Its laid back Main Street style but extremelly great food at very low prices. Its an original atmosphere of locals, candle light at night and great for hanging out or enjoying some good conversation.
Great for lunch, casual atmosphere but still hip. The goat cheese sandwhich was quite tasty. Not too special but I would have it again. The theme here is the best part.

Known for its nachos, the Foundation is the place to wind-down with drink after a night of dancing at The Fox nearby. Open ’til 1:00 am (and often far later than that), this laid-back, rap-music-blasting eatery offers craft beer, simple cocktails, and wine served in mason jars, of course. To eat, healthy(ish) post-drinking fare like tofu stir-fries, veggie chilli and chickpea curries will help line your stomach.
View this Smart ListFor delicious, towering nachos with all the toppings, and a laidback ambience that lends itself to party debriefing, head to The Foundation. Open long after the sun goes down, this Main Street haunt is an ideal location for late-night noshing on peanut and tofu stir-fries, veggie chilli, and chickpea curries, all to the sweet sounds of post-club conversations and incredibly loud rap music (tip: asking the waiter to turn down the tunes is definitely a faux pas).
View this Smart ListNo list of vegetarian cuisine in Vancouver is complete without mentioning Main Street’s favourite casual dining restaurant. The lineup down the block is often for The Foundation’s famous (and enormous) nacho platters, but their veggie burgers are just as delicious. The patties – served with salad and mango dressing – are made with peanuts and are dense enough to sink the Titanic.
