Located in one of the oldest buildings in Vancouver, Catch 122 Café & Bistro takes its name partly from its address and partly from co-owner Tammy Siu's play on the well-known expression and satirical novel by Joseph Heller, Catch 22. "We opened the doors here in 2012," explains Tammy's husband and business partner, Brent Kyle. "We were searching for a name and Tammy thought of Catch 122. It's been a hit with our customers because they find it easy to remember!"
Tammy and Brent aim for a casual, relaxed atmosphere in the bistro. "It's not fine dining," says Brent, "but the food is excellent and great value."
With that in mind, everything at Catch 122 made from scratch, on the premises, with high-quality ingredients from local suppliers. "We make everything ourselves—the sausages, the bacon, the cold meats,” Brent explains. The quality really comes across." By using local suppliers, the team is able to keep a keen eye on quality: the dairy and meat at Catch 122 are all sourced locally, as are the eggs, which are personally delivered to the bistro by the farmer who raised them. "We're his biggest customer!" laughs Brent.
Brunch is served until 4 p.m. and is very popular with Catch 122’s regular clientele. "When you read the brunch menu, it sounds good, but when you try it, it exceeds your expectations!" Brent says.
For customers arriving later in the day, happy hour snacks and beverages are available between 4 p.m. and dinner, which starts at 6 p.m.. "The dinner menu is changed on a regular basis," explains Brent, "so that there's always something a little different for our regular customers."
Brent describes the cuisine at Catch 122 as quintessentially Canadian: "The food is influenced by many different places, just like Canada."
